What Defines a Leader
Are they born or are they manufactured. One thing they are not, is self professed. Leaders go by many different names, Mentor, Colleague, Innovator, Entrepreneur. The one constant is that they DO, they are compelled to act not sit on the fence indecisive. They are not bogged down in the label or honorifics, they do not call themselves leaders. They are leaders only to those who choose to follow.
Leaders attract people, they are the ones who have belief in something, stand for something and motivate by example. You can not force people to follow you, you can not order someone to follow you, it is the individual’s freedom of choice to believe in what you say or what you are doing.
If your motivation to succeed in business is only to “make a lot of money” you will surely fail. You must be passionate about what it is you are trying to accomplish, not out of vengeance or jealousy, but because you believe your ideas are just and will help others.
Ronald Reagan was known as the Great Communicator. He moved a nation and brought it together. He spoke of values and ideals. His words and inspiration ended a cold war and brought down a wall of tyranny without a single shot being fired. Not out of negotiation, not out of concessions, but by moving a world in believing in hope for a brighter future and a better way of life.
He spoke from the heart with a sense of humanity and humility. He stirred emotions within people from all walks of life, Democrat, Republican, East, West, Freedom Fighter, Fascist, Socialist and Communist. He spoke of lofty hopes and dreams not to make people yearn for something unattainable, but of the opportunity of prosperity that only America, her Democracy and promise of free enterprise offered if one only took personal responsibility and action.
A true leader inspires, motivates and helps stir the entrepreneurial spirit. He does not confine and rule, on the contrary, he helps open doors and open minds to the possibilities. He allows one the freedom and atmosphere to choose which path to take, which door to open but encouraging them to open the door themselves and try.
I am lucky to work with a man in my business, a very simple and humble man. He did not write well, he never knew how to make his voice heard on the Internet. Another team mate came along and sat with him for hours, asking him what this particular opportunity meant to him, bringing out his passion, desire and determination. Together they created something special. One man gave voice to the other and in doing so helped him open the door to new opportunities and possibilities. That is leadership, that is working on a team, each walked away filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
This story will be told, one person at a time. That each of us has the ability within us to be the next Great Communicator, even if it is one individual at a time. The word will spread, and they will come in hopes of finding their voice as well.
It is amazing what one selfless act can achieve, the ripple effect occurs, a new Entrepreneur is born, and another success story is told.
That is leadership.
